Replace episode files

A replacement updates the existing episode. It keeps the episode's identity and uses a new file address. Podcast apps may take time to show the change.

Replace the audio

  1. Open your episode's Media tab.
  2. Choose Replace file below the audio player and select the new recording.
  3. Wait for the upload confirmation. If processing is needed, wait for it to finish and review the audio.
  4. Open Review transcript and check the words and timings against the new audio. Publish the transcript again only when it is ready.

The old transcript is unpublished when the audio changes. Your saved text remains available for review. If automatic transcription is enabled, the new run replaces your saved text and edits when it finishes successfully.

An upload or processing failure does not mean the replacement is ready. Follow the error shown on Media. If the upload succeeded but the feed refresh could not be confirmed, refresh the page to check its status before uploading again.

Publish a corrected transcript

  1. Open Review transcript from Media and make your corrections.
  2. Choose Save to keep your edits.
  3. Choose Publish update, or Publish to feed if it is not currently published, and confirm.

Saving alone does not update the public transcript. Each publication creates a new public file address for the same episode. See Transcripts.

Help listeners receive the update

There are three different situations:

Listener stateWhat to expect
Their app requests the new file addressIt receives the replacement.
Their app still holds an earlier addressRequests that reach show.fm use the replacement handling. An interrupted download, or a stream requesting parts of the old file, can continue receiving its original version during retention. Previously cached files can still be served by the app.
Their device already has a completed downloadThat download can remain unchanged. They may need to delete the download and download the episode again after their app refreshes.

We cannot remove files already downloaded to a listener's device or promise an immediate update in every podcast app. If an interrupted download cannot resume, start a new download from the beginning.

Streaming and downloading can update at different times. Removing a download does not necessarily refresh the streamed version. If they differ, refresh the show in the app and check a fresh download; contact the app's support if its stream still uses the old recording.

An app may display its own generated transcript instead of your published transcript. A feed update alone does not prove that the transcript visible in that app has changed.

Understand storage and removal

Older published files retained for download compatibility do not use your storage allowance. Your current audio and any retained lossless master do count.

Unpublishing or deleting is a withdrawal, not a replacement. Previously published addresses are withdrawn as delivery updates propagate. This cannot recall a listener's cached or downloaded copy. Replacement handling cannot recover older files already deleted before their history was recorded.

For a show hosted elsewhere, replacing Your recording updates the recording held by show.fm. Follow your host's publishing workflow to change the audio its listeners receive.
