Migrate Your Embeds

If you moved your show to show.fm from another host, your WordPress posts probably still hold that host's players. The Migrate tab finds them and swaps each one for a show.fm Player block playing the same episode on show.fm.

Nothing changes until you confirm. You see a dry run first, and WordPress keeps a revision of every post the plugin changes, so you can restore any of them.

Before you start

  • Connect the site to show.fm. Matching needs your connected shows, so Migrate appears only on a connected site.
  • Import your show into show.fm first, so its episodes are there to match. See Import Your Podcast.
  • Use a WordPress account with the Administrator role.

Which players it finds

The scan reads your published posts and pages. It finds players from:

  • Buzzsprout
  • Libsyn
  • Captivate
  • Transistor
  • Spotify
  • Podbean
  • PowerPress
  • Seriously Simple Podcasting

It finds iframes, scripts, shortcodes, pasted links and the players these podcast plugins add from a post's episode details. It never runs the old players' code and never contacts the old host.

Players for a whole show or a playlist, rather than one episode, are not swapped. They are listed with no match.

Run the scan

  1. In WordPress, go to Settings → show.fm and open the Migrate tab.
  2. Click Scan posts.
  3. Wait while the plugin gets your episodes from show.fm and checks your posts. It usually takes under a minute.

To pause, click Stop scanning, then Resume scanning to carry on. If you leave the page, the scan carries on from where it stopped when you come back.

If the scan finds nothing, it says Nothing to migrate.

Read the dry run

The dry run sorts every player it found into groups:

GroupWhat it means
Ready to swapOne clear match each.
Need your choiceMore than one episode could match. Pick one, or leave it and it's skipped.
No matchWe couldn't find these episodes on your connected shows. They stay as they are.
Already show.fmThese already use a show.fm block.
Check by handThe plugin couldn't check these safely, so they stay as they are. Shown only when there are some.

Each row shows the Post, the Current embed, How it matched, the Matched episode and its Status.

How players are matched

The plugin matches each old player to an episode on your connected shows, using the strongest evidence it has:

  1. Audio file: the old player's audio file is the one your episode was imported from.
  2. Episode ID: the episode's ID in your old feed (its RSS GUID) matches.
  3. Title and date: the title matches and the publish dates are within a day of each other.

A match on title and date alone always needs your choice. The plugin never guesses.

Pick an episode

For each player under Need your choice, choose the episode in Choose an episode. Your pick is saved straight away. Leave it empty to skip that player.

Swap the players

  1. Click Swap with the number of embeds, for example Swap 12 embeds.
  2. Read the confirmation. It says how many posts change, and that WordPress keeps a revision of every post. Players with no match, players still needing a choice, and players already on show.fm stay as they are.
  3. Confirm.

Each player is replaced by a show.fm Player block in the same place. Nothing else in the post changes, and a published post stays published. If you leave the page, the swap carries on from where it stopped when you come back.

When it finishes, the results list What changed, with a Compare revisions link for each post. Posts that couldn't be changed are listed under Not changed, with the reason.

Undo a post

  1. In the results, click Compare revisions for the post.
  2. In WordPress's revisions screen, restore the revision from before the swap.

Restoring a post brings back its old player. For PowerPress and Seriously Simple Podcasting, their own player comes back too.

Scan again

Click Scan again after you import more episodes or fix a post. A new scan replaces the last report. Revisions stay.

Only one administrator at a time

One administrator can run a scan or a swap at a time. Anyone else who opens the Migrate tab sees the progress, and can carry on a swap only after they confirm it.

From the command line

You can run the same migration with WP-CLI. Run a dry run, read it, then apply it:

sh
wp showfm migrate-embeds --dry-run --user=admin
wp showfm migrate-embeds --resume --yes --user=admin

Replace admin with your administrator's username. See Use WP-CLI for every option, including how to pick episodes.
